5/3/2006 News from our SCCA friends in South Carolina

Becca is back and has jumped in with “Both Feet” and that is a real treat for her. Now if she could just get her SCCA baby seat approved so MariKate would not have to hear about Becca’s racing exploits second hand.

From a couple weeks back.

Becca Bertok “Saturday and Sunday I raced for the first time in almost a year at Roebling Road. In Saturday's race, I started second to last (very disappointing) but improved 7 positions, mostly in the first turn. About half way through the race, a red miata that I knew was going to be a problem that weekend because he had been a pest in practice went off driver's left at turn 8, just behind me, while I was trying to pass another car. This red miata came back on track and slammed into my driver's door destroying it. If I hadn't been there, he would have hit the wall. But, Steve's (Bertok) proud of me b/c I never lifted off the accelerator and passed the guy I was attempting to pass when I was hit on the last lap of the race. I noticed afterward that my left arm was a little sore though.”

“I improved by 3 seconds during Sunday's racing, moved up 4 positions in qualifying (still not the best) but moved up another 7 or so spots during that race. Again, I noticed my left arm was still sore. Monday morning, I winced when I tried to pull my seatbelt across me on my way to work. I decided to have it checked out, and sure enough, I have a hairline fracture across the inside of my left wrist. Steve and I figure it occurred when I got hit in Saturday's race. So now, I'm walking around looking like a klutz, all dressed nice for work and sporting a black splint on my left arm for the next three weeks. But, it was fun! I was finally comfortable in the car again by Sunday and hope to get back out there again soon and improve another 7 spots or more and 3 seconds faster with each turn of the wheel. It's a long shot, but hey, it's something to shoot for. ;)”
