11/8-9/2008 NASA Mid-Atlantic
Racing at Summit Point
Jessie met Daryl Wheeler in October at
Summit Point. Daryl is one of NASA’s instructors who
also has a rental car or two. She really enjoyed his
teaching style and was glad we were able to hook up with
him for our second weekend.
The schedule was a little different, no practice on
Saturday. The first time on the track was for
qualifying with two races to be run that day. Sunday
was one 60 minute race with starting position based on
Saturday results. Jessie would start last with her
Provisional license this weekend too.
Jessie’s qualifying times were close to
where she left of in October, good enough for 50th
of 57 in her group and 15th of the 22 Mazdas,
still in the high 1:30’s. The groups were smaller this
weekend so her group was combined with a faster group.
In race one Jessie started last of 22 Mazdas and
finished 16th. The race was red flagged
shortened to six laps, tough to get a clean lap in. In
race two she started last and finished 16th
of 22 running in the 1:37 area. This race was red
flagged shortened as well, again tough to get better
without some clean laps.
Sunday was the 60 minute race. That’s a
lot of track time and Jessie was looking forward to it.
Daryl was a big help, giving Jessie great input on
places to improve her times. The race was shortened to
50 minutes, still a great time on the track. Jessie got
into the 131’s consistently and that put her up into the
mid-pack racing with several others which made the
weekend. You don’t want to ride with a racer who is not
competing <G>. She finished 19th of 28 in
her group and 9th in class.
Thanks Daryl, maybe we can work a Mazda
race or two into the 2009 season. It was nice to have
several old karting friend come up to the track to watch
too.
